The Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Photovoltaics (IEK-5) is among the leading scientific and technological institutes in the world in the field of silicon thin-film photovoltaics. It investigates both the basic physical principles of and technology for efficient and economic thin-film solar modules. Activities cover the entire spectrum of research and development from materials science to process and solar cell development to the demonstration of industrially relevant production techniques.

Research scientist specializing in organic photovoltaics

Your Job:

One of the main challenges in photovoltaics is finding cost-effective ways of coating large areas with thin semiconductor films in order to reduce the cost per KWh of electrical energy as much as possible. To meet this challenge, we conduct research on semiconductors that can be deposited on substrates from solution. We are particularly interested in the fabrication, optoelectronic characterization, and simulation of organic and perovskite-based solar cells. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of fundamental loss mechanisms so that we can selectively improve solar cell efficiencies. IEK-5’s activities in the area of solution-processable solar cells are conducted partly at Jülich and partly at Duisburg.
You will be responsible for helping to expand research activities in Duisburg, fabricating and characterizing solar cells, and assisting the head of division in supervising PhD, postgraduate, and undergraduate students.

Your Profile:

  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, materials sciences, or a related discipline
  • excellent knowledge of semiconductor physics and photovoltaics
  • experience in fabricating and characterizing organic or hybrid solar cells would be beneficial
  • experience working with transient optoelectronic methods such as TOF, TPV, CELIV, CE, or TDCF would be particularly advantageous
  • exceptional ability to work both independently and as part of an international team
  • publications on relevant topics in peer-reviewed journals
  • good command of English
