The institute IEK-8 is one of the world's leading institutes for the investigation of the chemical composition of the atmosphere with the aim of understanding the connections between climate change and regional and global air quality. The department "Reactive Trace Gases" is, among other things, is involved in the diagnosis of air quality issues by the observation of pollutants and their precursors in flowing traffic in German city centers. For this purpose, a mobile laboratory was constructed with a world-wide unique set of time-resolved instruments for the on-line measurement of pollutants. With these observations, the proportion of various emission sources such as traffic and house fires can be quantified and changes in energy-related emissions by the introduction of new technologies detected. We want to extend the current instruments on-board the mobile laboratory to observe hitherto unknown emissions, in this case to the highly toxic substance HNCO which is known to be produced by nitrogen oxide reducing vehicle catalysts.

Postdoc, atmospheric chemistry

Your Job:

The tasks are divided into three stages:

  • commissioning of an optical tunable diode laser system (TDLS) for the measurement of HNCO and its calibration
  • operation of this instrument during the measurement campaigns of the mobile laboratory of the IEK-8 in German city Centers
  • interpretation and publication of results in project reports and international journals

Your Profile:

  • completed university degree (doctorate) in physics or chemistry
  • experience with design and operation of optical systems
  • excellent programming skills
  • willingness to participate in multi-week measurement campaigns within Europe
  • strong ability to work independently and within a team
