Research at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, IBG-1: Biotechnology aims at a detailed molecular understanding of microorganisms and enzymes which are used as biocatalysts. The resulting knowledge and technologies are used for the development of novel resource-efficient and sustainable bio-processes, thereby reducing our dependency on fossil carbon sources, in particular crude oil. The IBG-1 is an interdisciplinary team of biologists, biochemists, chemists, computer scientists, physicists, and engineers with a common aim: the use of microorganisms or isolated enzymes for the synthesis of bio-products from renewable carbon sources.

Postdoc for biosensor-guided metabolic engineering of microorganisms

Your Job:

This position is part of a project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Goal is development and application of transcriptional biosensors for the engineering of microorganisms using fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). For this purpose biosensors first need to be designed, constructed and characterized before performing FACS-based screenings of genetic diverse libraries of microorganisms for improved product formation. Genomes of isolated variants will be sequenced for identifying underlying beneficial mutations.

Your Profile:

You hold a university degree (German diploma or Master´s degree) and have a PhD in biotechnology, biology, bioinformatics or similar disciplines. Important prerequisite is profound knowledge and experience in the field of genome sequence analyses. In addition you are familiar with methods and approaches of molecular biology (cloning, diversity generation) and, ideally, have hands-on working experience with fluorescence activated cell sorting. You enjoy practical as well as theoretical scientific work and have the ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary environment. Very good English skills (speaking and writing) and an outstanding commitment to the tasks appointed to you complete your profile.
