The Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1) offers a dynamic international working environment. We develop materials, parts, and components for future high-efficiency energy conversion and storage systems (with a focus on solid oxide fuel cells, solid-state batteries, thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines and gas separation membranes). The main priority is inorganic materials which can be processed into functional layers from powders or via the gas phase. Our work involves a fast transfer of the scientific results and technologies to industry.

Postdoc in the field of materials science, specializing in coating technology

Your Job:

Within a DFG-funded project, you will be working on the investigation of residual stress states in thermally sprayed coatings in close cooperation with colleagues from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The aim is to establish an improved understanding of the role of residual stress states on the properties of coatings. The results will be used for the optimization of repair coatings within a project funded by the federal government with two companies in the aeronautics field.

Your main tasks will be:

  • performance of coating trails using different thermal spray methods
  • investigation of the properties of the coatings (microstructure, mechanical properties, content of phases)
  • investigations using the ICP in situ stress sensor and XRD stress analyses
  • development of a model approach for the understanding of the correlation between residual stresses and properties in coating systems
  • transfer of the results to the coating of components
  • intense exchange with colleagues at KIT and in industry using different media and regular meetings

Your Profile:

  • university degree and doctoral degree in materials science, physics, or a comparable discipline
  • good knowledge of coating technology, particularly thermal spraying technology
  • good command of German and English
  • experience in planning, executing, and evaluating scientific research tasks
  • excellent capacity for collaborating with internal and external project partners
  • high degree of team spirit and flexibility as well as willingness to travel
