Our aim is to lay the foundation for the key technologies of tomorrow. With over 5.500 employees, this member of the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft belongs tot he largest interdisziplinary research centres in Europe.
The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe and makes it available to researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany and throughout Europe. As part of this task, the Technology division of JSC performs diverse Research and Development activities, often in close collaboration with international partner institutions. These comprise the evaluation of new Hardware technologies, the development of system Software, and the evaluation of applications. In the frame of DEEP Projects („Dynamical Exascale Entry Platform“, currently already in the third generation with DEEP-EST), industry partners, computer centres, and research institutions led by JSC, develop together an innovative computer architecture and build a so-called „Modular Supercomputer“. For this purpose Hardware-, Software- und Application developers work very closely building interdisciplinary groups. The project results are presented both within the collaboration and at international level in workshops and conferences.

We are looking to recruit a

Software Developer in the support of application-developers

Your Job:

You will be part of a small team that is responsible for the analytics of simulation software and the support of their developers for code optimisation. Your work will include:

  • Work in the analysis of simulation-applications, in close collaboration with their developers
  • Identification of optimization potential, with focus on architecture-specific optimisation strategies aiming at scaling and/or performance improvements
  • Suggestion of specific implementation strategies and support of by the software adaptations
  • Benchmarking on hardware prototypes and analysis of results
  • Installation of libraries
  • Presentation/publication of results in collaboration meetings, workshops and conferences

Your Profile:

  • Master in computer science, mathematics, physics or other natural science
  • Experience in Software development, benchmarking and application optimisation
  • Usage of Unix-based Operating System
  • Programming experience in at least one the following: C, C++, Fortran
  • Parallel programming with MPI, OpenMP, or pthreads
  • Ability to work independently and in a team of scientists with heterogeneous backgrounds
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel to project meetings within Europe


Desirable Knowledge and/or experience
  • Good command of German
  • Use of software management tools as SVN and Git
  • Experience in the support of application developers
  • Good knowledge of computer architecture and understanding of its impact on application Performance
