The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe, enabling scientists and engineers to solve highly complex problems by simulations. In recent years the JSC has established Simulation Laboratories as a domain-specific research and high level support structure.
The “Simulation Laboratory Terrestrial Systems” (SimLab TerrSys), bridges the gap between Earth System research and computational science by providing community-specific assistance for terrestrial systems researchers via a dual aspect of service and support and research and development. SimLab TerrSys undertakes cutting edge research in the field of terrestrial systems science via the application of advanced supercomputing technologies for integrated modeling of terrestrial systems, which consider the hydrologic, energy and biogeochemical cycles, and provides services such as porting and tuning complex coupled model systems and performance analysis of community codes. The SimLab also develops software for data analysis and data management and is a member of the “Helmholtz Analytics Framework”.
The SimLab TerrSys belongs to JSC and the Centre for High Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems in the Geoverbund ABC/J The Centre enables high performance computing (HPC) in the geosciences in the region Aachen, Cologne, Bonn, and Jülich.

Research Scientist in data analytics and high performance scientific computing in the geosciences

Your Job:

  • Data assimilation: Develop methods for a parallel data assimilation framework for continental-scale terrestrial systems encompassing all compartments from the groundwater to the atmosphere
  • Big Data: Contribution to solutions of the big data challenge in geoscience, and the application and advancement of data analytics and management strategies
  • Terrestrial systems science: Development and extension of new and existing parallel scientific software tools or processing chains with a focus on the integrated Terrestrial Systems Modelling Platform (TerrSysMP)
  • Service and Support: Porting and scaling of numerical models, profiling and performance optimisations, testing, standard implementations, code maintenance

Your Profile:

  • University degree in either computer science, geosciences, physics, civil engineering or applied mathematics
  • Experience in high performance scientific computing and modelling preferably in geosciences
  • Demonstrated (parallel) programming skills with FORTRAN and/or C/C++ and ideally also Python under Linux
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team across institutes; very good communication and organisational skills
  • Very good command of the English language

the following qualifications, knowledge and experiences are preferable:

  • a PhD degree and relevant scientific publications
  • Knowledge in the areas of meteorology, hydrology, numerical methods and knowledge of coupling between numerical codes
  • Knowledge and experience with big data analytics and management
  • experience in professional software development
