The transition to a sustainable energy system requires the deployment of a range of efficient techno-logies for the conversion, storage and distribution of renewably-generated power and heat. The IEK-3 is at the forefront of this endeavor. In collaboration with national and international partners from research and industry, we develop solutions for mobile and stationary applications and conduct groundbreaking research into fuel cells and the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, including its production, distribution and storage. Your Job:

The Institute for Energy and Climate Research (IEK-3) seeks a scientific researcher for fundamental investigations on fuel cells and fuel cell materials. The focus is on non-aqueous proton-conducting electrolytes as well as on systems of non-aqueous proton-conducting electrolytes and ionogenic polymers for potential applications in cells for operating temperatures >100 °C (HT-PEFC). This goal of this research is to achieve a deep understanding of the electrochemical processes (electrode kinetics and transport) and physico-chemical properties of such non-aqueous electrolytes or electrolyte/polymer systems to provide a broad knowledge-base for the future techni¬cal implementation.

In addition to this focus, the operating behavior of complete cells with new and conventional electro-lytes/electrolyte membranes will be investigated, addressing catalyst degradation, media distribution and correlation to the operating parameters/optimization.

Other tasks within the institute include:

  • Scientific supervision of a (high resolution) scanning electron microscope
  • Scientific supervision of a (nano-) X-ray computer tomograph and an X-ray diffractometer

Your Profile:

  • Completed university and doctoral studies in chemistry, physics or materials science
  • Solid knowledge in the field of physical chemistry, especially electrochemistry
  • Knowledge in the area of X-ray computer tomography and X-ray diffractometry
  • Knowledge in the area of scanning electron microscopy
  • Reliability and time management
  • Great self-initiative and a high commitment
  • Solid German and English language skills (written and spoken)
