Advertising division: JSC - Jülich Supercomputing Centre
Reference number: 2018-118

The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful computer systems for scientific and technical applications in Europe and makes it available for research purposes to scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany, and throughout Europe. The NIC Research Group “Computational Structural Biology” located at JSC uses these extraordinary HPC resources to quantitatively understand the structural and dynamical properties of biomolecules.

We are looking to recruit a as soon as possible a

Postdoc in field of theoretical biophysics (RNA simulation and structure prediction)

Your Job:

Scientific Context:
Understanding the function of biomolecules requires knowledge of their structures. Some of these structures are experimentally difficult to measure. This is especially true for RNA, one of the hottest research areas in molecular biology and medicine. We have developed structure predictions methods for RNA by applying methods from theoretical physics to analyze their abundantly available sequential information. Our methods allow to accurately predict spatial contacts within these biomolecules, which then guides their structure prediction.

Your tasks:

  • Improving statistical methods for detecting spatial adjacencies in RNA
  • Improve the quality of structure prediction methods for RNA
  • Application of methods on large databases by using supercomputers
  • Presentation of Results in scientific conferences
  • Publication of Results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Supervision of PhD students

Your Profile:

  • PhD in physics or related fields
  • Excellent knowledge in statistical physics or machine learning
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English, command of German is helpful but not mandatory
  • Strong publication track record in computational simulation and modelling
  • Experience in computational biology / bioinformatics
  • Experience in programming in C/C++ or Python and in using scripting languages commonly used on Unix systems
  • Ability to cooperate and take the initiative
  • Strong proactivity and curiosity
  • Ability and willingness to work in an international, interdisciplinary and distributed team, as well as to assume responsibility

Our Offer:

  • embedding into the interdisciplinary environment of the NIC research group “computational structural biology”
  • potential to develop your personal strengths, e.g. by comprehensive training in the field of high-performance computing by renowned experts
  • International, interdisciplinary working environment on an attractive research campus, ideally situated between the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Aachen
  • Flexible working hours and various opportunities to reconcile work and family life
  • Limited for 2 years
  • Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
  • Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD).

Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women.

We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
