We are offering a

PhD position "Setup of a continuously stirred flow reactor: a tool for studying atmospheric secondary organic aerosol processes"

Your Job:

Atmospheric oxidation of organic compounds contributes to formation secondary gaseous pollutants and to formation of secondary aerosols. With this PhD work you will investigate to which degree the recently discovered group of highly oxygenated organic molecules contribute to the atmospheric secondary organic aerosol formation. Highly oxygenated organic molecules are formed fast in the gas phase by multiple intramolecular rearrangements in organic radicals. For such formation/condensation studies temperature controlled, continuously stirred flow reactors have proven to be extremely useful (Ehn et al. Nature, 2014).
Your tasks include to rebuilt and to improve our continuous stirred flow reactor (Jülich Plant Atmosphere Chamber), with features of flexible quantitatively controlled sources for organic compounds, carefully controlled inflow/outflow of gases and aerosols for detailed mass balances, and innovative light source management for control of oxidant levels and selection of different pathways within the oxidation cycle of organic compounds. In your new chamber setup you will investigate the atmospheric oxidation process of organic compounds, integrating: i) characterization of highly oxygenated organic molecules in the gas-phase. ii) determination of their vapour pressures and partitioning into the particulate phase. In your studies you will apply chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS).
The planning and execution of experiments require a high level of teamwork, because the interpretation of the complex chemical processes is only possible by involving other accompanying measurements.

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field with good final grade (German system equivalent 2.0 or better)
  • Knowledge about mass spectrometry and physical or analytical chemistry is advantageous
  • Good skills in the spoken and written English language
