The Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), investigates the chemical and physical processes in the troposphere that impact the chemical composition of the atmosphere. We are seeking for a postdoc (physics, chemistry, environmental sciences) for two years.

Postdoc "Setup of a continuously stirred flow reactor: a tool for studying atmospheric secondary organic aerosol processes"

Your Job:

The atmospheric oxidation of organic compounds contributes to formation secondary gaseous pollutants and to formation of secondary aerosols. We will investigate in how far the recently discovered group of highly oxygenated organic molecules possibly dominates the atmospheric secondary organic aerosol formation. Highly oxygenated organic molecules are formed fast in the gas phase by multiple intramolecular rearrangements in organic radicals. For such formation/partitioning studies temperature controlled, continuously stirred flow reactors equipped with chemical ionization mass spectrometers have proven to be extremely useful (Ehn et al. Nature, 2014).

The first part of your work you will focus on rebuilding and to improving our continuous stirred flow reactor (Jülich Plant Atmosphere Chamber), with features of flexible quantitatively controlled sources for organic compounds, carefully controlled inflow/outflow of gases and aerosols for detailed mass balances, and innovative light source management for control of oxidant levels and selection of different pathways within the oxidation cycle of organic compounds. In the second phase you will investigate of the atmospheric oxidation of organic compounds, integrating i) detailed characterization of oxygenated and highly oxygenated organic molecules in the gas-phase by CIMS, ii) determination of their vapour pressures and partitioning into the particulate phase. Here we want to focus on the development of an in-situ method. Results will be compared to ex-situ TAG-AMS and FIGAERO-CIMS. The planning and execution of experiments require a high level of teamwork, because the interpretation of the complex chemical processes is only possible by involving other accompanying measurements.

Your Profile:

  • PhD degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field
  • Knowledge about mass spectrometry and physical or analytical chemistry is advantageous
  • Interest in process modelling is welcome
  • Good skills in the spoken and written English language
