The position for our Institute for Energy and Climate Research – Troposphere (IEK-8) concerns the investigation of the distribution of nitrogen oxides (NOx and NOy) in the tropospheric column and lower stratosphere from measurements made aboard of passenger aircraft in the context of the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS (www.iagos.org).

Tropospheric NOx and particularly NO2 are gaining increasing attention because of their leading role in global air quality, which will become one of the key areas of future atmospheric research programmes. Regular airborne measurements of nitrogen oxides on board of passenger aircraft in IAGOS are the only means of obtaining regular and highly resolved in-situ data in the free troposphere and tropopause region as well as on tropospheric NO2 column data. Such data are urgently required for global monitoring of air quality, atmospheric process studies and satellite validation studies, e.g. for TROPOMI on Sentinel 5P.

We are looking to recruit as soon as possible a

Postdoc "Measurements of nitrogen oxides and total odd nitrogen in the atmosphere aboard commercial aircraft in IAGOS"

Your Job:

  • Quality assurance of the measurements and validation of the data
  • Analysis of the distribution of nitrogen oxides from the observations and establishment of a climatology
  • Investigation of possible sources of nitrogen oxides, as well as their atmospheric chemistry and transport, with a particular focus on global air quality objectives
  • Comparison of climatologies from IAGOS observations with results from chemistry transport models and remote sensing, in close cooperation with our modelling group and with partners from other European projects such as Copernicus

Your Profile:

  • Doctoral degree in chemistry, physics, meteorology or a comparable discipline
  • Profound knowledge in atmospheric chemistry and physics, and a strong interest in international collaboration
  • Besides strong technical and organizational skills, it is expected that the results of the research are presented in peer reviewed publications and at international conferences
  • Proven experience in data analysis and programming skills using state of the art software tools, such as Matlab or Python, is a requirement
  • Experience in atmospheric transport modelling using, e.g., FLEXPART or LAGRANTO, is of Advantage
  • Profound knowledge of English language is mandatory
