The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe and makes it available to researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), in Germany, and throughout Europe. The division High-Performance-Computer Systems (HPS) at JSC is responsible for the integration and operation of different supercomputing and high-performance storage resources in the facility. JSC is engaged in major European scientific projects like the FET Flagship 'The Human Brain Project'. Within the ICEI project, the HPS division operates storage and compute resources for the federated pan-European e-Infrastructure Fenix.

We are looking to recruit a

Research Scientist in the IT system administration of High-Performance Computing systems

Your Job:

  • Contribute to deployment and operation of a new Cluster system with innovative architecture for interactive usage scenarios as well as Virtual Machine hosting tasks
  • Integration of the system in the Fenix infrastructure
  • Support of platform developers working on the porting on the Fenix infrastructure
  • Active contribution to the ICEI system as well as to the Human Brain Project in the context of the „High-Performance Analytics and Computing Platform“ subprojects
  • Benchmarking and system tuning
  • Development and operation of tools for system monitoring
  • Problem analysis and resolution including third-level user support
  • Cooperation with hardware and software vendors

Your Profile:

  • Bachelor or master (or comparable) degree from a university with internationally accepted quality standards in informatics, mathematics, or a related subject
  • Strong knowledge of Linux in the areas of installation and administration and ideally system optimization
  • Strong knowledge in shell and script languages (Python, Bash, etc.)
  • Knowledge in C/C++ and ideally further programming languages used in HPC (Fortran)
  • Experience with the programming and usage of supercomputers
  • Willingness to contribute with talks to international conferences and participate in courses and tutorials
  • Good command of English and preferably good knowledge of German
  • Structured and systematic working style as well as ability for cooperative work in teams

Ideally knowledge in further relevant areas:

  • Batch- and workload management Systems
  • parallel file systems like GPFS or Lustre
  • data centre network technologies and high-speed interconnects like InfiniBand and Omni-Path Architecture
  • virtualization techniques (OpenStack, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
