Research Scientist "Application of optical absorption measurement techniques in tropospheric chemistry”

Your Job:

The chemical degradation of trace gases is predominantly triggered by reactions with free hydroxyl (OH) and nitrate radicals (NO3). New chemical compounds such as ozone, hydro-peroxides, acids and aerosols are formed during the atmospheric purification process. These products are not only relevant for air quality and health, but also influence the radiation balance of the atmosphere and thus the climate.
Using highly specialized physical measurement techniques, our institute conducts experimental research into atmospheric radical and photochemistry. The measurements are carried out in ground-based field campaigns, on airborne platforms and in the Jülich atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR. We use photochemical model simulations in comparison with experimental observations in the field to improve and extend our understanding of atmospheric reaction processes. A better description of chemistry contributes significantly to the development of more reliable models for predicting air quality and climate change.
The planning and execution of field and chamber experiments on atmospheric chemistry require a high level of dedicated collaboration. The interpretation of the observed photochemical processes requires interdisciplinary cooperation of specialized working groups with simultaneous consideration of various measurement data.

Its tasks include in particular:

  • Measurement of atmospheric OH radicals using laser absorption spectroscopy, in contrast to all other OH measurement methods, the Jülich absorption instrument enables inherently calibration-free absolute concentration measurements, which qualifies it as an internationally accepted reference technique ("golden standard").
  • Development of new in-situ trace gas and radical measurement methods based on optical absorption spectroscopy
  • Planning and execution of experimental investigations of tropospheric processes in field measurements and in the SAPHIR chamber

Your Profile:

  • Doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field
  • Sound knowledge in atmospheric chemistry and physics
  • Good knowledge and comprehensive experiences in optical absorption spectroscopy and physical and analytical chemistry
  • Practical experience in data analysis using modern software
  • Good knowledge of modeling photochemical reaction processes
  • Good technical and organisational skills
  • Active participation in international scientific cooperationGuidance for Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Students
  • Successful presentation of research results at international conferences
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Acquisition of third-party funding projects and their coordination
  • Very good knowledge of English

Our Offer:

  • Exciting working environment on an attractive research campus with excellent infrastructure, located between the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Aachen
  • International and interdisciplinary working atmosphere
  • A comprehensive further training programme
  • Flexible working hours and various opportunities to reconcile work and private life
  • Limited for 3 years with possible longer-term prospects
  • Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
  • Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD)
