DIRECTOR for the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Molecular Organization of the Brain

Advertising institute: INM-2 - Molecular Organisation of the Brain
Reference number: -

Forschungszentrum Jülich pursues cutting-edge interdisciplinary research addressing the pressing issues facing society today and simultaneously works on varied tasks in the field of research management. It helps to solve the grand challenges facing society in the fields of energy and environment as well as information and the brain. With some 5,900 employees, Jülich – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of the large interdisciplinary research centres in Europe.

In a joint procedure with the University of Cologne, Forschungszentrum Jülich is seeking a DIRECTOR for the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Molecular Organization of the Brain.

In accordance with the “Jülich Model”, the successful applicant will also be appointed professor (grade W3) at the University of Cologne.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Molecular Organization of the Brain (INM-2) focuses on the investigation of the metabolic and neurochemical processes that underlie the basic functions of the brain as well as neurological and psychiatric disorders. A multitude of imaging and analysis methods (PET, MRI, autoradiography) are used for this purpose. The institute’s priorities are investigations of animal models (in vitro and in vivo) and of test subjects ranging across scales from the molecular to the systemic level, as well as the evaluation of novel radio ligands up to clinical application.

We are seeking an internationally renowned investigator (medical or natural scientist) with outstanding expertise in the field of nuclear medicine and neuroimaging research to fill the position of director at the institute, which is headed collegially. The priority of the professorship will be the development and implementation of innovative concepts of molecular imaging, with the aim of solving important issues in basic neuroscientific research as well as transferring these solutions to potential applications. A substantial contribution to the “Decoding the Human Brain” programme is expected. In particular, the new director – in collaboration with the neighbouring university hospitals – is expected to develop innovative translational approaches using positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. A unique strength of Forschungszentrum Jülich is hybrid MR-PET high-field imaging, which opens new perspectives for the simultaneous recording of various metabolic parameters and the binding and concentration of various neurotransmitters in vivo.

The professorship involves teaching two lecture hours per week per semester (e.g. research track model studies course in medicine and/or neuroscience) at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne.

The successful candidate should have a university degree followed by a doctorate and teaching experience, and be able to demonstrate additional academic achievements in the form of a “Habilitation”, a junior professorship, or research work at a university, research institution, or in some other area (e.g. industry).

Applications from female scientists are especially welcome and will be given preference in the case of equal suitability, qualifications, and experience, unless special personal reasons concerning a male candidate outweigh these considerations. We particularly welcome applications from disabled persons. In case of equal qualification, disable persons will be given preference in accordance with state equal opportunity legislation.

Both institutions also offer support for dual career couples. The successful candidate will be offered support in the form of comprehensive human resource development.

Applications in English should be sent with the usual documentation (CV, copies of certificates, list of publications, teaching experience, brief summary of previous research activities including a list of third-party funding, research and teaching concept for the position advertised) preferably by email by 05.01.2018 to
