Exascale Research – The European Approach

On the ISC'13 in Hamburg, the three EU-funded Exascale projects CRESTA, DEEP and Mont-Blanc will present themselves in an own BoF session.

Europe’s approach to tackling the Exascale challenge is underpinned by three complementary Framework 7 research projects: CRESTA, DEEP and Mont-Blanc with a combined funding of €25 million. The aim of this BoF session is two-fold: firstly to update the community on Europe’s progress towards achieving Exascale and secondly to obtain input and solicit lively discussion on the latest challenges and the best approaches to addressing the Exascale challenge.
The panel will consist of project representatives from the three European Exascale projects CRESTA, DEEP and Mont-Blanc, who will discuss the European approach towards Exascale supercomputers. The session will commence with short presentations from each of the three projects to describe their progress (40 minutes in total). Following this an open discussion will be held with questions and answers to the audience and panellists focused on how these initiatives are meeting the challenges of computing at the Exascale.

The CRESTA project will present its novel approach to Exascale system co-design which focuses on the use of a small, representative set of world leading applications to inform and guide software and systemware developments. This methodology is designed to identify where problem areas exist in applications and to use that knowledge to consider different solutions to those problems. CRESTA takes an approach of incremental or disruptive solutions across the complete Exascale software stack. We will present our progress in this area. The panellist of this project will be Mark Parsons, Executive Director (Research & Commercialisation) of EPCC, UK.

The DEEP project is building the prototype of a novel Exascale architecture where a standard cluster computer is complemented by a cluster of many core cards, called Booster, based on Intel’s Xeon Phi. For a given application, Cluster as well as Booster resources can be assigned to different parts of the code in a dynamical manner, thus optimizing scalability. In this BoF the DEEP hardware architecture will be presented focusing on the Booster part of the system. The design of Booster node cards, rack backplane, and the integration of all the Booster elements into an Aurora rack from the DEEP partner Eurotech will be presented. Additionally, the DEEP monitoring functionality for Reliability, Availability and Serviceability will be described. The panellist of this project will be Paul Arts, Technical Director & Head of Operations of the HPC Business Unit of Eurotech, Italy.

The Mont-Blanc project will present the system architecture of its first integrated ARM-based HPC system. We will describe the compute node architecture, the system interconnect, the packaging infrastructure, and discuss preliminary performance evaluation results. We will also briefly update the status of the Mont-Blanc target applications, and the future plans regarding HPC software porting to ARM platforms. The panelist of this project will be Alex Ramirez, Team Leader at Barcelona Supercomputing Center and coordinator of the Mont-Blanc project.
