"SPATIAL ECOLOGY AND EARTH OBSERVATION"

Abstract:

Operational hyper-temporal image data sets (i.e. images obtained at regular fixed intervals) are now widely available and yield accurate results. Image processing techniques developed for hyper-temporal image analysis have elements in common with hyper-spectral imagery, with satellite hyper-spectral imagery being on the threshold of becoming operational. In this seminar I will review a number of spatial ecological applications using hypertemporal and hyperspectral imagery including vegetation quantity (biomass) and quality (foliar biochemistry), species identification and richness, as well as animal movement and migration. The concept of essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) and the role of earth observation in global mapping and monitoring of EBVs will be discussed. Finally the limitations and potential of planned satellite missions will be discussed.
