Abstract:

The rhizosphere is where soil and roots actively interact and their physical properties are markedly different from those of the bulk soil. In particular, mucilage exuded by roots keeps the rhizosphere wet during soil drying, possibly improving root water uptake. On the other hand, mucilage turns hydrophobic upon drying, temporarily impeding the rhizosphere rewetting. In this seminar I will present the implications of such rhizosphere dynamics on soil-plant water relations and I will discuss key questions and challenges in this research area.
