Buckling and wrinkling of filaments, networks, and capsules

Theorie-Seminar

The talk addresses variants of buckling instabilities,
which go beyond the well-known Euler instability of
beams under compression. Buckling instabilities of
stiff semiflexible polymers or filaments are strongly
affected by thermal fluctuations. Moreover, buckling
can also be induced by molecular motors pushing a
filament, which can give rise to buckling oscillations.
Two-dimensional networks of stiff polymers under shear
undergo a wrinkling instability, which is related to
buckling and strongly modifies the elastic
response of such materials. Finally, I present some
results on buckling and shape analysis of closed
elastic capsules and capsules in a "hanging-drop"
geometry.
