ICS-2 Seminar: Andreas Menzel - Statistical characterization of microswimmer suspensions and their dynamics

We introduce and analyze a statistical approach to the dynamics of simple model microswimmer suspensions. This is achieved within the framework of dynamical density functional theory. The derivation of the theory is illustrated. Moreover, our description is shown to reproduce results previously observed in particle-based simulations.

Under spherical confinement, high-density shells form, composed of swimmers that point radially outward. Increasing the strength of self-propulsion, polarly ordered high-density spots emerge, corresponding to effective hydrodynamic fluid pumps. We predict further instability at still higher strengths of self-propulsion, leading to unsteady dynamic behaviour.
