Thermal transport in atomic-scale devices

Atomic and single-molecule junctions represent the ultimate limit to the miniaturization of electrical circuits [1]. They are also ideal platforms to test quantum transport theories that are required to describe charge and energy transfer in novel functional nanodevices. In the last two decades, a lot of progress has been made in the understanding of the electrical, mechanical, and even optical properties of atomic-scale devices. However, the thermal transport in these systems has remained largely unexplored due to experimental challenges.

Fortunately, the situation is starting to change and the development of novel experimental techniques has allowed us for the first time to investigate fundamental issues related to the energy transport and its interplay with electricity at the nanoscale. In this talk, I will review our recent theoretical and experimental efforts to understand basic heat transport phenomena, such as heat dissipation [2] or thermoelectricity [3], in atomic-scale junctions. Moreover, I will also briefly discuss our recent progress on the investigation of the radiative heat transfer (or thermal radiation) between objects separated by nanometer-size gaps [4].
