Quantum Computers – Status, Applications, and Perspectives

Quantum computing is currently coming out of the starting blocks of fundamental research and making headlines as a promising and disruptive technology. This talk aims at clarifying the different computational models including gate-based fault-tolerant quantum computing and quantum annealing, and discussing what the elusive and probably near singularity of quantum computers outperforming classical supercomputers means. I will discuss the status of experimental platforms and crucial next steps towards broadening the capabilities of quantum computers.

This presentation is primarily aimed at researchers interested in but not necessarily actively working on quantum computers. It has overlap with a recent meta-study.
