Nanotechnology had in recent years had a large focus on growth and structure of semiconductor nano wires due to their large potential for application in new energy technologies. I will give a brief review of the applications and show what x-ray synchrotron radiation can offer in characterization of the structure and dynamics of such systems.
I will include the new opportunities using X-ray beams of a few hundred nano meters in size that has emerged in the last years. This enables the investigation of single wires instead of the sample average and hence to look at the structural variations of nominally identical nano structures.
