Chiral domain walls in ultrathin films
During the last year, we witnessed a break through in the observation and application of chiral domain walls to spintronics. A couple of years ago  the presence of chiral domain walls due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in perpendicularly magnetized structure-inversion asymmetric Fe films on W(110) was theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy . Using the Bauer-LEEM at Berkeley, Yizheng Wu [3,4] and his group were able to show that these novel types of walls in ultrathin films are a rather general phenomenon and that the chirality or "handedness" of the domain wall can be engineered using different materials, stacking and combinations.
André Thiaville  showed that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction stabilizes the domain wall during motion and larger speeds can be sustained till the walker breakdown sets in. How currents excite chiral domain walls and how this fits in into a potential device concept was central to the study undertaken by the Parkin  and Beach groups . I think this is an exciting new direction that should be highlighted.
