Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy for Graphene-based Systems

By combining the spatial resolution of transmission electron microscopes (TEM) with the analytical power of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), on can now study electronic excitations of nano-objects at the nanometer scale. At these dimensions, a detailed understanding of the imaging process and the response of the target is only possible in the framework of quantum mechanics.
In the first part of this talk, I will give an overview of the theoretical description of TEM-EELS using either classical electrodynamics or quantum mechanical scattering theory. In the second part, the use of ab-initio calculations and simple dielectric models for the interpretation of EELS experiments in graphene, multilayer systems and single-wall carbon nanotubes will be discussed.
