RASHBA SPLITTING AND RASHBA POLARIZATION AT CRYSTAL SURFACES

Abstract:

A complex-band-structure view on the Rashba splitting of surface states will be presented. Qualitative analysis of the Rashba effect for surface as well as for bulk continuum states will be given within a one-dimensional model [1]. The limitations of the perturbational approach to the Rashba effect will be revealed, and the role of the crystal lattice and the surface barrier will be discussed.

Spin-polarized angle-resolved photoemission from non-magnetic surfaces will be considered withi the one-step theory of photoemission. Special attention will be paid to the spin polarizationof the photocurrent from bulk continuum states, which has been recently experimentally observed on Bi(111) [2] and W(110) [3]. The role of photoemission final states and dichroism effects will be discussed.
