Spin-orbit induced effects in heavy-element surfaces from first principles

We study from first principles the relativistic electron structure of heavy element surfaces with strong spin-orbit interaction. In particular, we analyze the spin-polarization associated to spin-splitted surface states in the Tl/Si(111) and Pb/Ge(111) surfaces. We also analyze the excitations induced by a time-dependent electric field among the surface states employing a formalism based on the maximally localized Wannier functions. We find that these excitations can absorb a significant part of the total irradiated light, even though the underlying mechanism is a second-order relativistic effect.
