Non-collinear spin structures such as chiral domain walls and skyrmions are being intensively studied since they are promising for spintronic applications. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is crucial for stabilizing these non-trivial magnetic states favoring a unique rotational sense. With spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) and density functional theory (DFT) using the FLEUR code, we study domain walls (DWs) and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in epitaxial films of Co/Ir(111) and Pt/Co/Ir(111). Epitaxially grown ultrathin films on single crystal substrates are best suited for a detailed study of interface DMI due to their undisturbed interface quality. We find an interfacial DMI that stabilizes Néel-type DWs with clockwise rotational sense, where the calculated DW widths are in good agreement with experimental observations. The total DMI nearly doubles from Co/Ir(111) to Pt/Co/Ir(111), however, a simple additive effect is not observed for one atomic Co layer.
