Dr. Herman Smit epxplains how ozone sondes are calibrated

Dr. Hermann Smit is a researcher at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich and Chair of the of the Jülich Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE). JOSIE is an activity of the World Meteorological Organization. Its aim is to implement a global quality assurance plan for ozone sondes in routine use today around the world to watch global changes of ozone in the atmosphere. In order to assess the performance of the different types of ozone sondes, the environmental simulation chamber at the Forschungszentrum Jülich is established as World Calibration Center for Ozone Sondes (WCCOS). The simulation chamber enables control of pressure, temperature and ozone concentration and can simulate flight conditions of ozone soundings up to an altitude of 35 kilometres. Dr. Smits shows the chamber and explains how the calibration is done.
