Main Access Road: Construction Work Continues – Buses Also Affected

4 January 2019. Refurbishment of the main access road should have been completed by the end of 2018. However, additional work by Thyssengas was necessary on the gas mains at the junction between the Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße and Leo-Brandt-Straße roads. On top of this, bad weather in the run-up to Christmas also delayed planned work. Outstanding work is now due to be completed as soon as possible.

Please note: the main access road will remain open to traffic for the duration of this work. The Waldstraße road is currently still closed.

Buses coming from Aachen (SB 20 and 220) and the shuttle bus (219) will continue to be affected by the ongoing construction work. The Waldstraße road closure affects the usual routes of these buses. Diversions via the L253 and Leo-Brandt-Straße roads are in place. Delays are expected as a result.

Cyclists and pedestrians

Cyclists and pedestrians may use the footpath and cycle track between the Rurtalbahn stop and the main gate as usual. Between the main gate and the BAW site, they may use the signposted paths through the woods or take the route via the Rurtalbahn stop.

Daubenrath gate from 6 am until 8 pm (for employees)

For the duration of the construction work, the Daubenrath gate is open Mondays to Fridays from 06:00 to 20:00 (for employees only).

Construction work completed on the B56 road

Construction work on the B56 road by the state agency Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW has since been completed. All of the roads that were closed near Jülich have been reopened to traffic.

What’s next for the main access road?

First of all, work around the junction between the Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße and Leo-Brand-Straße roads will be finalized. Then, the asphalt surface on the Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße road will be finished. This will require temporary traffic lights once again. When this work is finished, the connection to the Waldstraße road will be reopened.
Following this, the new shared footpath and cycle track as well as the lighting will be finished. Other work, such as the dismantling of the provisional road and the reinstallation of grassy banks, barriers, road markings, and signposts, will then be completed.

Traffic on the Leo-Brandt-Straße road will not be affected by this work. Here, the only work remaining involves reinstalling the barriers, road markings, and signposts.
