Novel network technologies

Future massively parallel high-performance systems will employ
accelerators in order to implement compute capabilities at the
Exascale and beyond. While today accelerators can be seen as an
attachment to standard processors in commodity-server hardware, next
generation many-core computing devices will act autonomously in highly
scalable interconnect fabrics. This challenges the current multi-level
crossbar-switch technology as it might not deliver the performance and
scalability required then. The Technology Division investigates
alternative technologies providing the capabilities to face these
challenges. Examples are the FPGA-based torus network of QPACE or the
EXTOLL technology ( under investigation in the context of
the DEEP project (
