High-Level Support from the JSC Simulation Laboratories: 2nd Call, July 2012

Several Petaflop-scale supercomputers are now available in Europe (4 in the top ten of the June 2012 Top500 list), but it remains a challenge to fully exploit these resources with single applications. Substantial efforts are still needed in order to enable computational science communities to solve problems with high scientific impact through efficient use of high-end supercomputing resources.

To help meet this challenge the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) has set up several Simulation Laboratories. Four such units have now been established at JSC in the fields of Computational Biology, Molecular Systems, Plasma Physics, and Climate Science. A further Lab in Highly Scalable Fluid and Solid Engineering has been set up under the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA-HPC).

Following their successful high-level support initiative in 2011, the JSC Simulation Labs are again inviting current and potential supercomputer users to apply for expert help in adapting and optimizing their applications to state-of-the-art HPC architectures. In this 2nd Call, the emphasis will be on longer-term projects aimed at designing new computational methods or improving existing algorithms capable of exploiting highly parallel architectures – in particular the Juropa and BlueGene/Q machines hosted at JSC. Proposed work packages may involve up to 6 person-months of SimLab staff resources and are expected to take the form of a scientific cooperation, ideally culminating in joint publications or follow-up projects with external funding.

Application:

Applicants should fill out and submit the template SL_support_2012.doc, outlining the scientific background of the model, nature and details of the work to be performed, as well as expected outcomes and benefits, to simlab@fz-juelich.de.

Deadline:

The present Call is open-ended and is expected to run until at least mid-2013. Proposals will be assessed at regular intervals depending on demand and staff availability.
