How to Apply for Computing Time on Supercomputers at JSC

Applications for resources on the JUQUEEN successor JUWELS (Jülich Wizard for European Leadership Science) and JURECA have to be filed in general by applicants, who are employed at universities or research facilities in Germany; here, the nationality of the applicant ("Principle investigator, PI") does not play a role. Applicants from Europe but outside of Germany are advised of the possibility to apply at PRACE. Individual cases may deviate from this general rule after consultation with the NIC Scientific Council and the NIC Board of Directors.

The Principal Investigator must have a proven scientific record (preferable a PhD or comparable degree) and must be able to successfully accomplish the proposed tasks.

Computing resources are allocated on the basis of independent referees' reports. Apart from the scientific relevance of the project, an important criterion for the allocation of computing resources is that the project can make reasonable use of the computer and use a large number of processors in parallel in the computations.

Computing time periods are yearly - with the possibility of application twice per year - and will begin 1 May and 1 November each year. The next call for proposals will open on 22 Januar 2018. The deadline for the next call (period from 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019) will be on 23 February 2018, 17.00 CET.

Application for Regular GCS/NIC Computing Time

Applicants, who are employed at universities or research facilities in Germany and who are not affiliated with the RWTH Aachen or Forschungszentrum Jülich are eligible to apply for a regular GCS/NIC computing time project. JUQUEEN is to be shut down by the end of March 2018. Starting with the current call resources on its successor JUWELS will be provided for the scientific communities. JUWELS will be a modular system to be set up in several steps. In the first step, the cluster module (CPU) will be established and will be available for this call. Its 2500 nodes are equipped with dual-socket Intel-Skylake Platinum 8168. About 2 % of the nodes will be equipped additionally with 4 Volta GPUs yielding a total performance of about 12 PF/s. In order to bridge the time gap until the planned booster model for JUWELS will be established in a second step, you are invited to apply for computing time on the JURECA Booster Module for highly-scalable applications instead.

Important Notes:

  • The JUWELS Cluster Module with its 12 PF/s peak performance replaces the JURECA Cluster Module (CPU) for GCS/NIC users. Computing time on the JURECA Cluster Module will be granted only to a very limited extend. Only those applications which are able to efficiently use the JURECA Cluster Module in combination with the JURECA Booster Module are allowed to apply for the JURECA Cluster Module. Furthermore, a convincing work plan must justify the need to apply for this module. Projects which need only cluster and/or GPU resources should apply for computing time on JUWELS.
  • Please use the following link to apply for resources on JUWELS and/or JURECA. It is no longer necessary to file a separate application per supercomputing resource.
