Computing Time Application for the General-Purpose Supercomputer JURECA

Applications for resources on JURECA have to be filed in general by applicants, who are employed at universities or research facilities in Germany; here, the nationality of the applicant ("Principle investigator, PI") does not play a role. Applicants from Europe but outside of Germany are advised of the possibility to apply at PRACE. Individual cases may deviate from this general rule after consultation with the NIC Scientific Council and the NIC Board of Directors.

The Principal Investigator (PI) must have a proven scientific record (preferable a PhD or comparable degree) and must be able to successfully accomplish the proposed tasks.

Computing resources are allocated on the basis of independent referees' reports. Apart from the scientific relevance of the project, an important criterion for the allocation of computing resources is that the project can make reasonable use of the computer and use a large number of processors in parallel in the computations.

Please consider the following notes on the use of JURECA:

The JURECA Cluster Module consists of 1872 compute nodes. Each compute node contains two Intel Haswell processors with 24 cores in total and has 128 GB memory. It has a peak performance of 1.6 Petaflop/s. The Booster Module will be based on compute nodes with at least 96 GB memory and 68 KNL cores each.

A Peer Review Board of the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) reviews the research proposals and the referee reports and makes recommendations for appropriate allocation of supercomputer resources to the research projects.

Computing time periods are yearly - with the possibility of application twice per year - and will begin 1 May and 1 November each year. The next call for proposals will be announced on 10 July 2017. The next computing time period will begin on 1 November 2017, and will end on 31 October 2018.

The deadline for the next application will be on 14 August 2017, 17:00 CEST.

Please, first prepare a detailed project description that you will have to upload to the electronic questionnaire as a pdf file. Please follow the guidelines about form, content and size of the project description. Please, take particular care that

  • the estimate of the applied computing time is verifiable by the reviewer,
  • a plot is supplied that shows the scalability of the program under realistic production conditions, and that
  • you provide a statement about computing projects and applications for computing time you have with other supercomputing centres.

If you wish to add supplemental material to the project description (unpublished manuscripts, etc.), please collect that in a second pdf-file. This file you will also have to upload to the electronic questionnaire.

Please fill in the electronic questionnaire completely and attach the project description and - if necessary - the supplemental material as pdf files.

Please make sure that your data are complete and check them. Finally, please sign the application form and the PI agreement and send it by e-mail or by regular mail to the Coordination Office for the Allocation of Computing Time at JSC.
