Simulations in Astrophysics

In the formation process of stars, a protoplanetary disc evolves around the protostar. Most, if not all, of these stars originate from clusters with high fractions of multiple stars. In their early, embedded phases these clusters contain a significant gas component which eventually is removed by the strong winds of the massive stars.
We focus on two effects in the first Megayear of stellar/cluster evolution: The evolution of protoplanetary discs around the star and the effect of the ambient gas on a primordial binary population.

Vortex Method for Hydrodynamics Simulations

Parallel vortex particle methods are an efficient technique for large-scale simulations of turbulent fluid flows. One of their big advantages is the intrinsic adaptivity of vortex particles, since computational elements exist only where the vorticity field is non-zero.

Hyperbolic Flux Tubes

Hyperbolic Flux Tubes

The Sun is one of the most interesting objects for plasma physicists. Especially its outer regions – the photosphere and corona – provide a variety of unsolved questions. From solar observations and theoretical investigations it became clear that current sheet formation is the key to answer many questions. In this project we investigate, using magneto hydrodynamical simulations, the creation of thin current sheets inside a hyperbolic flux tube.

High Energy Density Physics

High Energy Density Physics

High Energy Density Physics spawns a wide range of topics. Among them is fast ignition fusion, an alternative approach to achieve ignition in laser nuclear fusion processes. It has the potential to relax density and temperature requirements and reduces the energy input. We propose a magnetically assisted (MA) fast ignition scheme.
