Quantifying Plant Performance from Above

Researchers from IBG-2 were fundamental in the first demonstration that plant stress can be monitored using the fluorescence signal from an aircraft to analyse photosynthetic performance. The IBG-2 at Forchungszentrum Jülich operates the high performance aircraft imaging spectrometer HyPlant, that allows the retrieval of sun-induced fluorescence emission from vegetation. Fluorescence is a remote sensing parameters that reflects photosynthetic performance and thus indicates plant health and stress. Beyond mapping photosynthesis in the field this innovative technology may also proof to be of high value in supporting breeding and plant physiology from the level of single plants to the ecosystem.
