Graduate program "Quantitative Plant Sciences"

Plants provide biomass for the growing demands in a world with increasing population, less fossil resources and higher risks for the environment. Plants are the basis of a future bio-economy, where renewable raw materials from plants are used for delivering healthy food to a growing population as well as for non-food applications for materials, chemicals and energy. Plant production is affected by climate change and plants are key elements in mitigation of climate Change.

On the basis of molecular, physiological and ecological expertise, IBG-2 focuses on integrated concepts for an intensified and sustainable crop production. New technologies, such as phenotyping with non-invasive methods combined with bioinformatics, open up new opportunities to generate and apply knowledge on plants for a sustainable bioeconomy.

Within its graduate program “Quantitative Plant Sciences” the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences - Plant Sciences (IBG-2) regularly seeks for

Doctoral Researchers in Natural, Agronomical or Bioinformatics Sciences.

Usually, in spring (March) and autumn (September), in “job offers” several topics (and positions) for Doctoral Researchers are announced.

The graduate program of IBG-2 is based on three main pillars:

  1. Development of a personal scientific profile
    Each doctoral researcher is supported by a supervision team. This team consists of a daily supervisor, another member of the hosting research group, and the scientific supervisor at the according university. An experienced scientist of the institute from another research group completes the supervision team to function as a kind of independent mentor. Further people like external scientists or more institute scientists can be included, if it is helpful.
    This team accompanies the Doctoral Researcher during the whole PhD process. Regular meetings and reports to the supervision team are essential. The progress of research, problems and possible solutions are discussed. In addition the supervisor team supports in selecting relevant workshops or conferences, which could be attended by the Doctoral Researcher. In general the IBG-2 expects each PhD student to join actively (with poster or lecture) at a minimum of one international scientific conference.
    Of course each Doctoral Researcher is member of a research group, which includes regular meetings and scientific exchange, organized within this groups.

  2. Peer Mentoring within the group of Doctoral Researchers
    The IBG-2 Doctoral Researchers meet monthly and discuss relevant topics. Here each Doctoral Researcher reports and discusses his/her science and progress in a peer review process. Once per year a 2-day IBG-2 Doctoral Researchers Meeting is organized by the PhD students to present and discuss their science with other research groups and scientist of the institute and invited external scientists.
    Approximately each 1 ½ year the Doctoral Researchers organize a “Science Trip” to an university, research center or company of interest including 2-4 overnight stays and team building actions. This helps the students to interconnect themselves to international institutions.

  3. Development of personal “soft” skills and career development
    The Forschungszentrum Jülich offers a bunch of courses, some of them specifically for Doctoral Researchers, others being of more general content (-> more details). The IBG-2 strongly supports the development of personal skills. If the doctoral students declare the need for not offered courses, they can be organized IBG-2 specific.

All Doctoral Researchers additionally are enrolled as PhD student at one of the affiliated universities. The scientific supervisor at the university can be an institute member (see below) or an external professor. In the latter case also the university can be another one than the below mentioned.
