GrowScreen-Rhizo 1

Plants are cultivated in soil-filled custom-made rhizotrons positioned at a 43 degree angle.

Screen Root

The installation GrowScreen-Rhizo 1 allows simultaneous and non-invasive phenotpying of root and shoot growth and architecture of crop plant species grown in soil-filled rhizoboxes (Nagel et al. 2012). The system is located in the experimental greenhouse and consists of two rows of mounting frames in which rhizoboxes with a size of 90x70x5 cm are inserted. The rhizoboxes have one transparent polycarbonate plate to enable non-invasive root phenotyping. The inclination angle of the rhizoboxes is adjusted at 43° with the transparent plate of the rhizoboxes facing downwards to make roots grow at the transparent plate and make them visible and accessible for cameras. Between both rows of rhizoboxes a cabinet for imaging is moving automatically on a linear axis. The installation consists of 72 rhizoboxes which can be imaged within 1.5 hours. The platform is operational since 2011.
