Deutsches Pflanzen Phänotypisierungs Netzwerk (German Plant Phenotyping Network)
The Deutsches Pflanzen Phänotypisierungs Netzwerk (DPPN) is a project funded by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) with three other German partners.
DPPN supports the German and international science by establishing an efficient infrastructure and a robust portfolio of phenotyping approaches. The application covers the identification of gene-function relations linked to basic science and the support of breeding applications. The driving force for DPPN is the quantitative assessment of plant structure and function in relation to the environmental conditions by establishing the infrastructure and scientific expertise at the three partner locations Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Leibnitz Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung (IPK) and Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt (HMGU).
Based on concept and methodological studies as well as optimization and up-scaling approaches DPPN will establish infrastructure and methods for mechanistic, high throughput and field phenotyping. DPPN will provide a basis for phenotyping of wide range of traits related to roots, shoots and seed. Additionally phenotyping of phytophatological processes, interfaces to „omics“ technologies and, semi-controlled field equipment and a portfolio of methods for field phenotyping will be established.
The project establishes also the relevant IT infrastructure, develops different modalities for access to this infrastructure and enables the development of phenotyping infrastructure.
Additionally DPPN communication platforms with user groups and technology developers and enables training activities at the partner institutions.
