Atomic transport at interfaces
Using time-resolved, temperature-variable electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) we study the mass transport on electrode surfaces. Using methods from statististical physics, we analyze scaling laws of mesoscopic defect dynamics and from the scaling exponents we gain information on basic atomic processes at interfaces and on the relevant process energies. Such studies are important to understand deposition, corrosion and catalysis. More... .

Dymanics of polymers
Biopolymer networks are important constituents in animal cells. They define the shape of cells and their dynamical properties the mobility of cells. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy and modern fluorescence light microscopy we study the dynamical properties of biopolymer solutions and networks. More... .

Surface stress of biolayers
Using the laser-deflection method , we study the physical surface stress of biolayers and their interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. In our experiments we use the epicuticular wax layer of plant leaves. From these studies we deduce new information on the interactions of plants with the natural environment. More... .
