Research and Teaching
Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field. In Jülich, the disciplines shown above are present in four institutes (
IBT-1,
IBT-2,
IBOC, and
IMET).
The Institute of Biotechnology was established in the Forschungszentrum Jülich in the 70s, and later the Institute of Enzyme Technology was also established here; the successor institutes of the IET are the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and the Institute of Molecular Enzyme Technology. At the same time, the heads of the institutes were appointed to
chairs at the universities at Düsseldorf and Bonn. Since then, there is a close bond between research and teaching in modern biotechnology in Jülich.
The particular disciplines complement one another by interdependent research programs and joint projects. The application of scientific know-how offers students a broad spectrum of education.
