In the chemistry laboratory, research is directed towards the synthesis of novel colloids. Colloidal dispersions with specified properties are prepared in cooperative projects for further investigation by mainly scattering, microscopic and rheological techniques. The laboratory is equipped with five fume hoods and a glove box for the synthesis of oxygen or water sensitive substances. Centrifugation facilities up to 108000 g are available as well as a laminar flow box for preparing samples for light scattering. Special emphasis is paid to synthesizing silica or boehmite based model systems, fd viruses, e.g. for shear banding studies and as template for the preparation of silica rods, as well as the morphological tuning of nano-crystalline materials using microemulsions.
