The Institute for Energy Research / Plasma Physics conducts a research and development programme in the areas of high temperature plasma physics and thermo-nuclear fusion. As a central research facility the institute operates the tokamak 
TEXTOR.
All research and development activities for controlled nuclear fusion within the European Union are carried out under a joint coordinated programme sharing efforts (
EURATOM). The activities of the EURATOM/Research Centre Jülich Fusion Association are an integral part of this European programme.
A special agreement between the European fusion laboratories and the EU Commission, the "European Fusion Development Agreement" (EFDA), regulates research and development work in the field of technology, for ITER and for the operation and scientific use of the European JET experiment in Culham, United Kingdom.
