I N F R A D E M:
Infrastructures and demographic development - Framework conditions and challenges in the context of sustainable development

Background

For Germany and other European countries, a demographic development is expected involving a decline and an ageing of the population and a disproportionate regional development of population densities.

Along with the demographic change there will be a decline and a change in the demand for infrastructure services. From the aspect of settlement structure, the spatial relocation of the population is gaining significance and has an impact on the spatial distribution of the infrastructures. The spatial distribution of the apparent demographic development will additionally be determined by technological and political factors and by concentration processes.

Aim and Methodology

This study concentrates on material infrastructures for energy and transport and the challenges which result from demographic developments. The aim of the project is to develop a methodology which allows us to assess infrastructure policies according to the principles and rules of sustainable development and to develop infrastructure strategies. The InfraDem approach will develop and use three core elements: bottom-up modelling, top-down modelling, and a sustainable development assessment tool.
