Research into Electrochemical Energy Storage – Fresh Perspectives

HI MS: From electrolyte to energy storage
A new and different approach to research and development of batteries

The Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS) is an institute area (IEK-12) of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) of Forschungszentrum Jülich with branch divisions in Aachen, Jülich and Münster. Starting from novel electrolytes, at HI MS, research and development on new battery technologies is pursued. The electrolyte is the central component of a battery cell. In addition to ion transport (“ionics”), which is essential for all battery functions, the electrolyte also interacts and sometimes reacts with other components of the battery cell. It is therefore an essential component that determines cell performance and safety.

Based on five different battery electrolyte classes, new cell chemistry and cell designs are developed in a systemic and holistic manner in five research areas. A comprehensive gain in knowledge through interdisciplinary scientific cooperation is achieved by combining the R&D activities in seven competence pools along the battery value chain.
