As part of the program theme "SOFC" cell components, stacks and systems for high-temperature fuel cell with ceramic electrolytes (SOFC) are being developed in collaboration with various IEK institutes and the central institute ZEA-1. The focus is on the highly efficient supply of electrical energy for mobile and stationary applications, both locally and centrally, in the scale of some kilowatt to several megawatt. Based on this work research is also done in the field of high temperature electrolysis

Electrochemical measurement techniques

Electrochemical measurement techniques
• Electrochemical characterization of stacks in both the fuel cell and the electrolysis operation, inter alia by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

• Performance and stability measurements under various test conditions

• Analysis of the degradation processes, as well as the thermo-mechanical effects

• Further development of the stack design and validation in the development of computational models.

Modelling and Simulation
• Supporting stack and system development by simulations as cross-cutting task

• Analysis of the performance of system components and of SOFC/SOE Stacks from various viewpoints using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation methods

• Providing decisive impetus for the improvement of stacks and systems

Systems Research
• Design and lay-out of systems architecture

• Lay-out, design, and test of the peripheral system components, essential for system operation

• Development of dynamic component and system models

• Construction of demonstration systems up to 20 kW electric power, which also allow the use of hydrogen, for example for reconversion

• Optimization of system control and management

• Development and characterization stacks and systems for high-temperature electrolysis (SOE) and the combination of both (rSOC), based on the development of SOFC

• Investigation concerning their suitability for energy storage.
