TRENDS 2017 – Transition to Renewable Energy Devices & Systems

The objective of the TRENDS 2017 is to highlight game changers and look into the missing links required to achieve the G8 goals of reducing 80% of CO2 emissions by 2050 and the COP21 goal of keeping the global warming well below 2 K within this century.

The TRENDS 2017 will focus on relevant topics in relation to the transformation of the energy system and highlights the interconnecting of the power and the transport sector considering the COP21 goals. The conference will provide useful data, facts and figures to share different insights from power generation, energy transport and the energy use in mobility.

There are various approaches to use the volatility of renewable energy in today´s energy system as efficiently as possible. Thus it is necessary to determine appropriate storage technologies and/or further develop the existing energy system considering a fluctuating power generation. The main topics of the conference will be the status and prospects of hydrogen vehicles and batteries, Power-to-Fuel, DCDC grids, ideas for sector coupling and the connection of climate zones.rennung aus unterschiedlichen Quellen, Ideen für die Branchenkopplung und die Verbindung von Klimazonen.

International Summer School: Advanced Studies of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells organized by Yokohama National University (Japan) and Technical University of Graz (Austria)


The location of the event alternates between Graz and Yokohama.

A short description from the abstract book 2017 [1]:

The training program covers research topics in the fields of basic electrochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics and catalysis as well as the design and development of the complete fuel cell systems. The goals of the training are to provide the necessary theoretical background to young scientists and to make them more aware of the need to work closely with colleagues from different fields, such as natural sciences and engineering, in order to successfully develop and implement fuel cell technology.

The lectures cover following topics:

- Basic principle of fuel cells
- Basic electrochemistry
- Measurement and characterization techniques
- PEFC lifetime and degradation
- PEFC applications
- Hydrogen as fuel
- Hydrogen production and heterogeneous catalysis
- Advanced material studies

Within this framework Dr. Uwe Reimer (IEK-3) gives the lecture 'Modeling of fuel cells'.
