The aim of the PV OpMaat project is to provide technologies, process chains and application scenarios for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). In particular, the building façades have an enormous potential for energy production. Here the integration of photovoltaics can create a multiple use (for example, thermal insulation and energy production).

An important step for the successful development of an industry for building-integrated photovoltaics is the adaptability of the photovoltaic modules to the needs of the construction industry. In particular, flexibility in shape and size plays an important role. Due to their aesthetic appearance and their basic flexibility in terms of shape and size, thin film solar modules are the ideal basis for the development of BIPV components. In the PV OpMaat project, BIPV products based on the thin film materials CIGS and Perovskite are investigated.

In order to meet the goal of maximum flexibility in shape and size of PV modules, while at the same time keeping the costs for PV integration as low as possible, a new concept is being pursued in PV OpMaat. The production of photovoltaic modules is a global world market operated by international manufacturers. The construction sector, on the other hand, is usually a local market, since construction products are generally manufactured within a radius of a few hundred kilometers from the place of use. In order to link these two markets, PV OpMaat provides technologies that allow post-production adaptation of the shape and size of photovoltaic modules. On the one hand, large industries can be used by the central production of the PV modules and on the other hand a local market with individual characteristics can be addressed. Key component for the adaptability of the PV modules is a post-deposition, laser-based series interconnection of the photovoltaically active layer on the module glass. Thus, any shape can be obtained and adapted to the needs of the construction sector.

A broad scientific consortium is responsible to achieve the project objectives. In close exchange with the industry, the exact requirements for the processes and technologies to be developed are defined and dynamically adjusted during the project.
