UP-LLPC - Upscaling of Laser Liquid Phase Crystallization

The aim of this project is the up-scaling of the industrial production processes for the laser induced liquid-phase cristallization of silicon solar modules. The approach is based on the ultra-fast melting of thin silicon films on glass. The energy required for this purpose is selectively applied to the films via high-efficiency cw-diode lasers. This induces a crystallization process that increases the efficiency of the solar module to up to 16%.

Furthermore, this laser based approach enables direct growth of crystalline layers on low-cost window panes, reducing the layer thickness and, hence, the amount of silicon required by a factor of 10 as compared to the conventional technology. The LLPC technology thus holds an enormous potential for cost reduction and energy saving.
