The Institut of Energy- and Climateresearch - Photovoltaics (IEK-5)
The Institute of Energy- and Climateresearch (IEK-5) – Photovoltaics investigates the scientific basis and the technology for efficient and cost-effective solar modules made from silicon thin-films and related materials. We cover the entire spectrum from of research and development from the materials science to process- and device design and, finally, to demonstration of industrially relevant production methods. We concentrate on tandem devices made from amorphous and microcrystalline silicon with optimized power conversion adapted to the entire solar spectrum. For these solar cells we develop conductive and transparent contact layers with well designed microstructure for optimized light coupling into the solar cell. Our institute has excellent competences along the entire chain of research and development from basic science to the finished product including process and quality control.
The IEK-5 belongs to the world leading research institutions in the range of thin-film photovoltaics. Our research is conducted on the national and international level with partners from industry, other research institutions, and universities.
As additional, forward looking subject, we investigate all aspects of nanotechnology in the field of photovoltaics. These activities embrace components for light for the improvement of light management as well as nano-structured materials as novel contact or absorber layers.
