Following, the NUSAFE strategy aiming at a further reduction of valuation uncertainties, a full scale 3D CFD model of a PWR reactor containment is under development.

It is expected to support upscaling of novel insight obtained on experimental scale but also integrating and linking different single phenomena under realistic boundary conditions, resulting from predominantly buoyancy driven flows and mixing processes. By this, IEK-6 contributes to reliable assessment of the integrity of the containment during severe accidents, tackling hydrgen mitigation, wall condensation ans aerosol behavior.

The continuous development and validation of reliabel and efficient models describing accident relevant buoyancy driven transport phenomena is directly linked to the European large and medium scale thermal hydraulics facilities THAI (OECD/NEA THAI projects), PANDA and MISTRA (OECD/NEA HYMERES and French ANR MITHYGENE project) and the German CFD alliance. The systematic and comprehensive validation scheme is closely connected to the extension in the experimental database. Recently, CFD analysis identified and highlighted the significant effect of gas radiation heat transport inbuoyant containment flows. This novel issue is taken up as one key topic of the upcoming OECD/NEA HYMERES-2 project (start 10/2017). The state of the art CFD model is presently applied to review and answer remaining issues of the International Standard Problem (ISP) 47 on containment thermal hydraulics.

The first SETCOM (Separate Effect Test for Condensation Modeling) test campaign revealed first of its kind insights to the momentum, heat and mass transfer inside a turbulent condensing boundary layer in mixed convection regime. The internationally demanded data is not only highlyrelevant for containment scale CFD modeling of wall condensation heat transfer bur also of general interest in CFD application of wall bounded flows. Data from SETCOM are further used to develop so-called wall functions allowing to use CFD for analyzing the flow conditions inside the containment with reasonable calculation effort.
